Locked tombs in Cairo's City of the Dead.

Locked tombs in Cairo’s City of the Dead keep the giant cemetery’s living residents out of the valuable real estate. The Egyptian capital’s massive housing shortage means every available space, including the city’s sprawling burial grounds, are being populated by residents desperate for a place to sleep.

Longboarders race down a mountain road in West Vancouver in 2008. Skateboarding on certain public streets (including this one) has since been banned in some B.C. communities after a number of skater/vehicle accidents but, the popularity of the sport and the ubiquity of skateboards as a means of transportation has kept a debate alive and staved off a full out prohibition.

The great pyramids of Giza, one of the original wonders, revealed themselves as I created this bluff on an early January morning. Typically bustling with visitors, the complex was nearly deserted as the tourism industry dwindled in the months after the Jan25 revolution.

Just back from a surf trip to Sayulita, mainland Mexico. We suffered casualties, mainly my girlfriend’s broken finger, which happened in a collision with a friend riding a wooden paipo board, but good times were had and decent waves were ridden.

Its been a long, cold winter in the East and Torontonians thought they’d escaped old man winter’s grasp but, a late season dump of snow hit mid-March, clogging roads and delaying flights.

Toronto loves its Leafs and fans gathered in the hundreds outside the Air Canada Centre’s jumbotron to watch what went on to be a heartbreaking game 7 playoff loss to the Boston Bruins. The Bruins went on to lose to the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup final. As a Vancouverite, my allegiances lean to the Canucks but I have to admit I was caught up in the elation and despair as Leaf Nation rode a roller coaster of emotions through that round one series.
